Last summer, while investigating Kentish hop-picking songs we heard 'the Hartlake Bridge Tragedy'.

On 20th October 1853, 30 Irish hop-pickers of Romani descent drowned in the River Medway when their wagon was upended on Hartlake bridge near Hadlow.

This almost-forgotten story resounded very vividly for us and we believe there are parallels with some present-day tragedies that are similarly swept aside.

Many thanks to Dr Aidan Hehir for generously providing his vocal contribution.
